Martin Scherer is a California artist whose practice has unfolded across decades of drawing, painting, sculpture, woodworking, illustration, music, and design.
At the center of Scherer’s work is an enduring curiosity about form—how a line becomes an object, how an object occupies space, and how the simplest gesture can take on personality, movement, and humor. His studio practice moves freely between disciplines. A drawing may suggest a sculpture; a found branch may become the beginning of a form; carefully turned wood may sit alongside painted works, invented characters, mobiles, and objects that resist easy categorization.
This freedom is fundamental to Scherer’s work. There is seriousness in the making, but rarely solemnity. His work retains a sense of play and discovery—the feeling that an idea is being followed because it is interesting enough to see where it might lead.
The breadth of Scherer’s archive reveals a life spent making: experimenting, observing, refining, and returning again and again to questions of balance, material, movement, and form.
Elements, his series of suspended sculptural works, brings many of these ideas together. Reduced geometric forms are held in careful relationship to one another, creating compositions that shift with space, air, and the viewer’s perspective.
Presented by Good Design, this exhibition brings together works from across Scherer’s practice and offers an introduction to an artist whose remarkable body of work has largely developed outside the conventional art-world spotlight.
